  • Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that focuses on movement, balance, and control rather than strength or aggression.

    What makes Aikido different:

    • No competition

    • No sparring

    • No winners or losers

    • Training is cooperative, calm, and supportive

Instead of clashing with force, you learn to blend with an attack and redirect energy using throws, pins, and circular movement.

  • No - you don’t need to be fit, flexible, or sporty to begin.

    Aikido training:

    • adapts to your ability and pace

    • gradually improves fitness, coordination, and balance

    • is suitable for a wide range of ages and backgrounds

Many people start Aikido to improve their fitness, not because they already have it.

  • Our adult classes are open to ages 16+.

Aikido is particularly popular with adults because:

    • it’s low impact

    • it doesn’t rely on speed or strength

    • progress is steady and personal

If you’re unsure whether Aikido is right for you, just get in touch - we’re happy to advise.

  • For your first few sessions, just wear:

    • a t-shirt

    • jogging bottoms or sports trousers

You’ll train barefoot on mats, so please bring flip-flops or sandals to wear off the mat.

🥋 If you decide to continue, you may later choose to buy a traditional gi (training uniform) - but there’s no rush.

  • A class usually includes:

    • a gentle warm-up for mobility and balance

    • technique practice with a partner at a comfortable pace

    • ukemi (safe falling), taught gradually and carefully

Classes finish calmly and respectfully, and you’ll never be rushed or pushed beyond your limits.

  • No - grading is completely optional.

We follow a nationally recognised grading syllabus, but many students train purely for:

    • enjoyment

    • fitness

    • confidence

    • personal development

Most gradings are free of charge

Brown and black belt gradings carry a small admin fee due to national venue requirements.
